The leading companies in the Turkish Maritime Industry were invited for the annual Maritime Partners in Safety Workshop by Shell.

As described in the Invitation Letter:

The intent of this meeting is for the Turkish Maritime industry leadership community to meet and collectively drive forward the Partners in Safety Program as discussed at Maritime Partners in Safety CEO conferences held in Rotterdam in January 2019.

The meeting will seek to engage you and other Maritime partners on the following:
1. Leadership: “Deepening your impact”
2. Progress on the implementation of Partners in Safety in your organisations;
3. Sharing experiences and providing support to driving the “weak signal “campaign;
4. Introduction to Mental health and the “I’m not ok" campaign.

We are inviting the CEOs or equivalent of each Company and extending the invite to include one additional person from each partner Company who typically leads the implementation of the agreed actions in the Partners in Safety program. In other words, please attend together with your QHSE manager or similar.

It was a day packed with learning. We were happy to see old faces, others who have been with us since the beginning of the program, and also welcome beginners such as Borealis Denizcilik to the program. All of us are in this journey together and we seek to set a role model for others to follow and work towards.

Deputy CEO Marlon Weinstabl [pictured] gave a presentation on how Armona deepens their impact within the Maritime Industry. Core topics included Training, Leadership Visits and a moving story of the company's Resilience when their Headquarters were demolished by Government Authorities on June 1st 2017.

We would like to express our gratitude to the wonderful hosts Geden Denizcilik for organizing and executing a fantastic workshop.

Shipping and Tax Seminar

Atlantis' Directors attended the exclusive Shipping and Tax Seminar hosted by law firm Stephenson Harwood. 

The topics included:

1. "Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz" – Presentation by Sean Gibbons and Max Lemanski
2. "Overview of the financial leasing market in China and its future within the European market" – Panel discussion moderated by Simone Liu
3. "Tax and international asset holding structures" – Presentation by Hugo Jenney
4. "Financing opportunities for Turkish shipowners: traditional banks and new sources of finance" – Panel discussion moderated by Chris Vartzis

Atlantis Armona Saves Lives

On 16:05 UTC, Atlantis Armona detected a small inflatable boat consisting of 77 refugees in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Spain.

Atlantis Armona’s crew contacted the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency, assisting them in every way possible in order to have these individual rescued.
 
The search and rescue operation was a great success.
 
The “Centro Regional de Coordinación de Salvamento de Almeria” sent a letter of appreciation and gratitude to Armona Denizcilik for their assistance and sensitivity in the operation.

Dear Captain,

I would like to express on behalf of the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency our deepest gratitude and highest appreciation for your assistance in the SAR operation undertaken this afternoon at the Mediterranean Sea, in which 77 lives were saved.

Your vessel informed around 16:05 UTC to ALMERIA MRCC that a  small inflatable boat adrift with several migrant people on board was in her vicinity remaining in that position until the arrival of a rescue boat about two hours later.

The decisive and efficient intervention taken by you and your crew was absolutely crucial and avoided a high risk situation for these people as well as a probably prolonged and costly Search and Rescue operation.

To Foul or Not to Foul

The debate and discussion on antifouling coatings are evermore becoming a popular topic in today’s shipping world. Reason for which is that shipowners face myriad options of coatings that each promise different characteristics and benefits. For example, certain specialized paints intend to slowdown marine growth on a vessel’s hull, affecting the performance and longevity of the application. Driving factors such as the strive to save fuel and the choice of low emission coatings, contribute to the growth of the ‘marine coatings market’ over the past few years.

Today, there are at least 50 different antifouling coatings available in the market. Understandably, each shipowner has to overcome the challenge of analyzing, evaluating and selecting the product they believe best fits their needs.

Atlantis recently drydocked several vessels of their 3500 and 6000 dwt fleet at Gisan Shipyard.  An array of alternative antifouling coatings were tested. These include Sail Advance RX from PPG (applied on Armona, Antalya and Alvarado), Dynamic 8000 (applied on Alhambra) and Hempaguard X7 (applied on Andaman and soon to be applied on Antibes) both from Hempel.

Armona Denizcilik, the technical arm of Atlantis Tankers, consider Hempaguard X7 to be a game-changer. The service period of this kind of antifouling coating is 60 months. Furthermore, for Andaman’s next Class Special Survey (2024), the vessel will not need blasting when compared to conventional antifouling coatings. Only a single coat of paint will be applied to the current coating system, which will save costs and render less dry-docking days.

Hempaguard X7 is a silicone-based advanced fouling control coating with high levels of solid content. It provides smooth, low surface energy, repellent surface with unique fouling control properties. These characteristics allow for high fuel savings potential and are especially suitable for vessels operating with long idle periods or in warm waters. The coating truly allows for flexible trading, fuel savings and fouling defence at any speed or during idle periods.

Chester Races 2019

The Shell Chemicals Europe Marine Team invited Atlantis Tankers to the Chester Horse Races 2019.
 
This traditional event hosted by Shell is a way of showing their appreciation to Owners.
 
Drinks at a beer brewery were followed by an early dinner at the private box overlooking the racecourse.
 
Participants at the event had the chance to be on 7 breath-taking races.

The vessel left the shipyard in an absolutely pristine condition. She is making her way from the Black Sea to West Med.
